Valencia vs Real Madrid Questionable team selection against Valencia
Real Madrid were well beaten by Valencia at Mestalla, going down 4-1 in the final game of Matchday 9 in LaLiga Santander. Carlos Soler scored a hat-trick of penalties, while Raphael Varane bundled a cross into his own net as well. Although the goals Los Blancos conceded were unfortunate, Zinedine Zidane has to take much of the responsibility for the defeat. His selection issues will be questioned by many.
Madridistas will have been left frustrated at how their team were beaten at Mestalla, but also by the line-up selected by Zidane. The Real Madrid boss picked Isco and Marcelo, despite both players being well off the pace this season. Did the likes of Toni Kroos and Ferland Mendy really need a rest?
Why does Zidane keep insisting on playing Marcelo? The Brazilian is far from his best at left-back, while his inclusion in the XI against Valencia was even stranger considering in-form Mendy was fit and available to play.
Jose Gaya was sensational for Valencia down the left wing. The captain was a nightmare for Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez, forcing the second penalty of the evening when Marcelo fouled Maxi Gomez. The Spanish international is in the form of his life.
Real Madrid conceded three penalties at Mestalla, with two being awarded by VAR. What this showed was that referees give what they see, independent of who it’s for or against. To complain, it took six minutes to decide that Lucas Vazquez and Yunus Musah had encroached on Soler’s first spot-kick. Six minutes!
Not much has gone Varane’s way this season. His latest mishap was a clumsy own goal, taking the ball over the line from a cross from the right. Real Madrid need him to play a lot better than he is right now.
