Manhunt Underway for Suspect in Deputy’s Murder

BREAKING UPDATE: A manhunt for a suspect believed to be armed and extremely dangerous is underway after a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed in Norridgewock, Maine, early Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed.

Cpl. Eugene Cole was shot and killed around 1:45 a.m. The suspect, identified as John Williams of Madison, Maine, then stole his cruiser and committed a theft at a gas station.

Authorities told WCSH-TV that police are now searching for a possibly armed suspect after the shooting at a Cumberland Farms store on Waterville Road around 1:45 a.m.

Police ordered Mill Stream Elementary in Norridgewock to close. Part of Route 2 has also been closed amid the ongoing investigation.

FBI agents are also reportedly assisting with the investigation.

Somerset County Sheriff will hold a media briefing at Norridgewock Fire Department later this morning.
